LAPP - Opting Out of LAPP - Pension

No — pension plan membership is a condition of employment from the first day of employment for permanent salaried employees and temporary salaried employees in AUPE, APT, Management and SAFA employee groups. Membership is not optional.

There are exceptions — if you meet any of these criteria, you would not be eligible to participate in LAPP:

employees who work less than 14 hours a week are not eligible to participate in LAPP
have already reached the maximum of 35 years of pensionable service with LAPP
are already receiving a pension from LAPP
are age 71 or older
casual employees are excluded for participating in the LAPP. However, a casual employee who moves to a permanent position at SAIT has the opportunity to buy-back the hours/service of the time they were a casual employee.
